Action Research PLan

Action Research Project Benjamin Bordlemay

Process Overview

Exploring Possibilities of Flipped Classroom Model for Mathematics

All of the following steps correspond to the Harris et al. text, but also addresses aspects of the Dana text as noted.

1.      Setting the Foundation –Based on discussions with my site supervisor and the district instructional technologists, the Flipped Classroom Model for teaching mathematics courses at our high school will be evaluated for effectiveness of student achievement. The goal of my action research project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom model in correlation with higher student achievement in the classroom and on state exams.

2.      Analyzing Data- Various data gathering will be utilized in analyzing the effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom model in the mathematics classroom. Year over year TAKS and STAAR data will be a primary source of information used in evaluation. Online surveys of student and teacher participants will also be used in gathering thoughts and usefulness from the classroom and suggestions on improvement from those involved.

3.      Developing Deeper Understanding – I will use research done on similar campuses as well as interviews with stakeholders on campus to assess the concerns and viewpoints regarding using the Flipped Classroom model in the mathematics curriculum. Online surveys with a suggestion area will provide other feedback from students and teachers as far aa the affects of learning in the classroom.

4.      Engage in Self-Reflection- Questions to consider

a.      Do I have the needed resources and time to conduct the research effectively?

b.      Do I have the skills and resources to present my findings to the faculty and assist in the implementation of changes, if needed, to a Flipped Classroom model?

c.      Will I be able to encourage teachers to participate in my interviews and surveys about the Flipped Classroom model?

d.      Are the technology resources available and teachers properly trained to institute the Flipped Classroom model?

5.      Exploring Programmatic patterns- I plan to discuss my findings in-depth with my administration on campus as well as the Mathematics department head. I would like to assist in the implementation of the Flipped Classroom model procedures and acknowledge best practices as to better help my fellow mathematics teachers. What skills and resources will the teaching team need to be successful in increasing student achievement? How will I help the teachers “buy-in” to the Flipped Classroom model and the students as well since  most students are not utilizing at home online resources?

6.      Determining Direction- Double checking my approach to implementing my action research project

a.      I am clear on the questions I am trying to research. I am attempting to resolve the question of the effectiveness on student achievement in implementing the Flipped Classroom model into the curriculum.

b.      I will need to acquire the assistance of several mathematics teachers in the department preferably in different subjects as well as the Instructional technologist.

c.      I will collaboratively work the teachers in the mathematics department to complete surveys, look at testing data, and interviews to assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom model.

d.      The timeline is realistic and will be adjusted if needed if additional time is necessary.

e.      The plan to monitor the project will be effective based on TAKS and STAAR data and district assessments and teacher assessments.

f.       I will evaluate the plans effectiveness based on the information obtained from TAKS and STAAR data. The plan will be deemed effective if the TAKS and STAAR data shows that the Flipped Classroom model has a positive effect on student achievement.

g.      If the data shows improvement on certain Flipped Classrooms and not on others, then I will need to evaluate what characteristics make an effective Flipped Classroom and what needs to be done to assist in the creation of more effective Flipped Classrooms in the future.

7.      Taking Action for School Improvement- I feel that a committee needs to be formed for the evaluation of the practicality of the Flipped Classroom model so that it can be evaluated throughout the year and best practices could be shared with all the stakeholders involved. Preferably, this committee would comprise of at least one teacher from each of the participating principles.

8.      Sustain Improvement-I would like to further research effective Flipped Classroom teaching strategies and compile a data bank of Flipped Classroom lessons for the district to use as they see fit.

  1. I will be paying close attention to your research progress. As this is a personal interest of mine. Your research may also provide new perspectives to my research plan which is to close the academic achievement gap of minority students in math and science. I am curious what is the student population, grade, etc? How will you incorporate STAAR EOC data? Has your school had more than one year of EOC data? Have you worked out a way to correlate to TAKS data? I have a lot of questions but it is a very interesting concept and as I said one that I am personally interested in as well.
